What is a Basenji?

Known as the Barkless dog, the Basenji is a distinctive breed. This small to medium-sized dog hails from Central Africa and is one of the oldest known dog breeds. With a rich history dating back thousands of years, the Basenji was primarily used for hunting by tribes in the Congo.

Unique Characteristics of Basenjis

What sets the Basenji apart from other breeds are its unique characteristics. While they are famously known as ‘barkless dogs’, this does not mean they are silent. Instead, they produce a range of unusual vocalizations, including yodels known as ‘baroos’, growls, and whines. The scientific reason for this is the shape of their larynx, which is physically unable to produce a typical dog bark.

Basenji Behaviour and Temperament

Basenjis are intelligent, independent and energetic dogs. They possess a strong hunting instinct and a keen sense of sight and smell, making them excellent at tracking. Despite their hunting background, Basenjis can also be quite affectionate with their family. However, their strong will and hunting drive mean they can be a challenge to train and are not typically recommended for first-time dog owners.

Basenji Health and Lifespan

Generally, a Basenji is healthy and can live between 13 to 14 years on average. However, like all breeds, they can be prone to certain health conditions. Some common health issues for Basenjis include Fanconi Syndrome (a kidney disorder), hip dysplasia, and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye condition). Regular vet checks can help detect these conditions early.
